2007 Rabbit Rescue in Rural Area

South Suburban Humane Society received an alleged complaint of abuse and neglect resulting in the suffering and death of approximately thirty rabbits in Milford, Illinois.

After contacting several agencies with no results, SSHS investigators traveled 60 miles to investigate the alleged complaint. They were informed by the Chief of Police that prior to their investigation, seven rabbits were discovered dead in their cages from heat stroke. The owner of the property granted permission for investigators to enter the shed where the rabbits were housed. There was no water or food provided.

The conditions were deplorable. There was extreme accumulation of feces and urine, no ventilation, and dark, damp, small cages. This made it difficult for the investigators to breath while removing the rabbits. The living rabbits were relinquished to SSHS by the owner, who stated she was unable to care for them. Fourteen rabbits were discovered deceased and in various stages of decomposition, some still in their little cages, lying in their own filth. Twelve rabbits were still alive and are at SSHS waiting for new homes.

Donations are needed for medical costs and to care for these rabbits.
