Our Furry Friends & Their Forever Families

Every year SSHS finds homes for over a 3,000 loving pets. Here are a few of our pets who found their forever homes...

I was volunteering at SSHS, when a scared 4 yr. old Chihuahua was surrendered by its owner. His name was Beethoven. Not very friendly at all. I don't know why I took a shine to him, but I did. He softened just a little with handling, but I noticed one day that he was crouched in the corner of his cage. I took him home to foster him. While in our care, he had a seizure. The vet said that his liver was not working right and he had a serious heart murmur. After doing the research online, we tried holisitic/herbal remedies and a liver detox diet. Seven weeks later his bloodwork was back to normal. We didn't think that someone would want to adopt a special needs Chihuahua who was also behaviorally challenged. Beethoven just can't get enough of someone's shoes (or toes) when they walk through the front door. So, we decided he would have a home with us. If you ever want to see a big guy coo and fawn over a tiny dog, come to my home and watch my husband in action. Never thought we would have a little dog in our home, but Beethoven is here to stay.

Fourteen years and almost 8 months ago, my wife and I adopted a beautiful little companion named Elwood. We renamed him Shadow and he changed our lives so very much... sadly we had to put him to sleep a few weeks ago. We had nursed him through a year of renal failure which, coupled with a bad seizure, finally claimed him. I cannot thank you enough for the care you gave him while he waited for his forever home... we know that he'll always be with us in our hearts. This is the last Christmas picture we took with him. As we contemplate another dog, I just wanted to let you know the chance you gave him by taking him in as a stray and helping him to have a good home to be adopted into made a tremendous difference in his life and ours. Though we live in Wisconsin and have for 13 years, we continue to support the Humane Society and we're confident that the next pup in our lives will be a rescued dog as well. Thanks for all you do!

Losing a dog can be one of the hardest things to do. And I felt that the loss of my old dog would never stop hurting. After hunting around, I went to your website on a whim where I found Kita. This beautiful Husky has been the answer to my prayers of making the pain of my former dog's death cease. Kita's very energetic and has been a constant companion for me. Thank you, South Suburban Humane Society.

This is Gizmo I adopted him after you brought him into the Matteson Petsmart, this was 2 years ago. He is now my best friend and baby. Thank you so much. Gizmo not only brings me joy everyday but he brought me out of my long battle with depression. We saved each others lives.

I adopted Maggie from SSHS way back in December 1996. At the time we were told that she was a stray that came to SSHS from a vet's office in the area. I can still see her cowering in her kennel next to a barking German shepherd dog that day, December 21, 1996. I knew instantly she was for me. How anyone could have let her become a stray is beyond me. She was already spayed, too. Maggie wasn't a puppy when we got her so she's at least about 12 years old now and has turned out to be the best dog in the world. I am truly an advocate for adopting adult dogs. Sure puppies are cute but it's so nice to not have to housebreak a dog! Facing the facts, Maggie is a senior citizen and when she goes to the Bridge, hopefully not for a long time yet, I will again adopt an adult dog and my first stop will be SSHS. Thank you for the love and shelter that you provide for the homeless animals.

I adopted Baron (formerly Doc) from SSHS in June 2007. I had recently lost my beloved pit bull, Cody. Baron sure helped fill the empty spot I had in my heart. Baron's older brothers tolerate him very well being they are seniors and he's a pup. Baron loves the snow, so much that I have to make him come back inside. He also loves being his mommy's shadow and playing with his chews. I love Baron, Baby Baron as I call him, so much and just want to say thanks for approving my adoption.

We adopted Diesel (formerly Pretzel) from your shelter for our sons birthday 5 years ago. He is a cherished member of our family and a constant companion and friend to all 3 of our kids. He loves to run and play in our huge fenced yard with his companion, a 2 year old pit bull-lab mix, another one of our rescued friends. We would be lost without his sweet, soft and cuddly nature. Thanks for doing what you do. We are just one of the many families who have been blessed by your organization.

We adopted both Chomper [the dog] in 1995 and Spike [the cat, formerly Peter] in 1998 from SSHS. They have both been amazing pets for us and we love them completely. Chomper has been with us for 13 years and is still going strong. They used to always take naps together, and sometimes they still do. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to have such great pets.

Just wanted to give SSHS an update on Hudson (formerly Midnight). We adopted him in June 2005 and he has shown us no shortage of love since then. His current hobbies include snoozing on his pillow and gobbling down lots of dog treats. He was at SSHS for five months before we adopted him, and we want to thank you for taking great care of him while he was there. We feel blessed to have him as a family member.

McCoy loves her new home with SSHS's new Executive Director, Emily. Playing with her brothers Spock and Kirk is a favorite pastime.

We adopted both Sweetie on the left and Max (originally Junior) from you. They are the very best of friends now and our little sweethearts. Sweetie loves the snow and runs as fast as she can. Max likes to eat snow and tries to follow Sweetie. They play and sleep together.

Duke (formerly Snoopy) joined our family about a year ago. You can tell by the smile on his face that he's one happy camper. He has a huge fenced yard that he can run around in and chase squirrels to his heart's content. He is the most loveable dog you have ever met (think 60 pound lap dog). Thank you for bringing him into our lives. I don't know what we'd do without him.

We adopted Chloe (formerly Nai Nai) in December of 2007. Chloe's playful and affectionate personality has been a wonderful addition to our family. She enjoys spending her days outside chasing animals out of the backyard, and her nights curled up on pillows and couches waiting for belly rubs. We are happy to have Chloe in our home and know that she is happy here too!

We adopted Ramsey (adopted as Manny) about a year and a half ago. He is Mr. Personality and is quite possibly the most loving dog ever. When we got Ramsey from your shelter he was 6 months old and had dog bites covering his body (he was thought to have been attacked by another dog before making it to your shelter). Ramsey was a little skittish around our other dog Mia, at first, but now they are best of friends. Those bites have healed and we like to think that Ramsey's soul has healed as well. We just wanted to send thanks for bringing such a special guy into our lives. I have attached some pictures. Thanks again.

I just wanted to thank Judi and the staff for helping facilitate the recent adoption of two kittens Dino (formerly Marshmallow) who is very happy to finally have a little brother, Elroy, (aka Bently) to keep him company. Thanks again for your accommodation and help.

I adopted Abby (formerly known as Zuni) from your shelter around 6 years ago. I just wanted to send a note saying how much I love her and what a great dog she is. She has a great home with 2 doggie playmates that she loves, a fenced in yard and we take daily trips to the park. She is happy and healthy and we just love her! Thank you for everything you do for your animals. I found a great best friend at your shelter.

Ziggy found his angels, Jessica and John, in Rockford, IL. Look at the new talent they discovered. We hear he's quite the Frisbee Catching Champion. Their local Pet Smart keeps a special "stash" of Frisbees just for Ziggy because after he catches them - he likes to chew them.

I adopted Harry in Jan 07. Here are some pictures of him with his sister/best friend Ruby. Harry has the pointy ears and tail (on left). I cannot remember how we got through the day before he came along.

Harley has been with us for almost two months now. Wze love him so much. He has a great time chasing his big brother John Deere around all day. They love each other alot. Even though Harley has his own cage he loves to go sleep with his brother. They are inseperable. Thank you guys for everything. Maybe we will see you soon. Maybe next year we will get them another sister or brother. Thanks again!

Odin adores his angels, Jeremy and Jennifer. Boy, does Odin love Jeremy. You can see it in his eyes. It was a perfect match. We're pretty sure that they love Odin just as much as he loves them.

If you have special pictures of you and your SSHS furry friend, please send them to .
SSHS would like to thank all of our adopters for choosing to adopt from a humane society.
